Welcome to the Heimaey Virtual Field Trip!

The Heimaey virtual field trip consists of DEMs, sketches, and videos and photos of Ben and company running around various locations in Heimaey. Following each video, there are a series of questions for you to answer. You will have to submit your work when you complete this section. To do this, complete the whole exercise and then you will be able to submit the page at the end. Ben will show you how it is done in class.

Where does the name "Vestmannaeyjar" come from?

The Old Norse word Vestmenn (literally "Westmen") was applied to the Irish, and retained in Icelandic even though Ireland is further east than Iceland.

Not long after Ingólfur Arnarson, the first settler, arrived in Iceland, his blood brother Hjörleifur was murdered by the slaves he had brought with him. Ingólfur tracked them down to the Vestmannaeyjar and killed them all in retribution, hence the name Vestmannaeyjar (the islands of the west men). This is speculated to have occurred in AD 875.

Eruptions were occurring in Iceland, recorded by the vikings in the famous Icelandic sagas, and eruptions have been occuring on average every 4-5 years in modern times. The background is a famous Viking longboat sculpture in Reykjavik.
